ASP.net Dev's...What's Your App?

Dec 8, 2007 at 11:01 PM
All ASP.net devs,

I am trying to get an idea of what Facebook apps are built by ASP.net devs. Most of the people on the Facebook developers forums are PHP devs and there doesn't seem to be many asp.net devs on there. There are a lot of posts about the platform, but I haven't seen any of this sort.

So just a few questions, whats your app name/URL, what has helped you to be successful, and about how many users use your app?

I'll start, my app is called Survey Hurricane (http://apps.facebook.com/surveyhurricane/). I think a good design and thinking through all of the angles of how someone could use this app has been helpful for us. We have just over 800 installs so far.

So, now its your turn...

We built an application that hooks into our existing web site - theplancollection.com. It shows house plans: http://apps.facebook.com/house-plans/. It took one guy about 20 hours to build.

are these applications iFrame or FBML based? i'm trying to decide which one is better/easier to implement.

Survey Hurricane is an iFrame based app, but there are a few FBML components. You have to write FBML to put something in a user's profile.

One thing that really bothers me is that Facebook doesn't allow iFrame apps to set a height of the iFrame, but you can in FBML. Kinda a pain if you ask me.

I agree....it's very unappealing to have the height of the canvas page set to the height of your browser.

Wajid made a post on the following thread to deal with canvas page heights for applications made using iframes: http://www.codeplex.com/Thread/View.aspx?ProjectName=FacebookToolkit&ThreadId=16234

Can anyone verify that this works?

A simple work-around is to set your application as FBML and have a single CanvasFBML page which has a single <fb:iframe> in it. You then have control over the iframe and can put whatever you want in there (including your existing Iframe-based Facebook app)... I'm in the process of switching my iframe-based app over to this method now after succesfully doing it with a new app.

This is true but not ALL forum prowlers are PHP lovers. I'm often wandering around there offering assistance or asking for help... you'll also learn a lot about the platform in general not just what tech people are using.

Are most of these applications you guys speak of developed as web applications or desktop applications? Also, whats the difference for the user experience between the two?

As far as I'm aware the vast majority are web applications. A Web application sits within the Facebook frame itself so to the end user it's a part of Facebook. Desktop applications can look like anything.

Hi All,

I am using Asp.net, Vb.net for developing the facebook app.

Can anyone tell me how to retrieve the new content into the profile box upon button click in the profile page.

I have used setFBML for initially setting the FBML on the profile box when the user add my app.

Thanks in advance,
vara.
