How do you Beta test?

Mar 8, 2010 at 5:52 PM

I know have my application up and running inside of Facebook. I can see it just fine. It's even in a profile tab on my Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Las-Vegas/The-T-Shirt-Guy/173663363705?ref=ts), it's the online store tab.

I'm not ready to launch yet but when I have my wife try to view it she doesn't see it unless she is set under developer. It doesn't show up in the search because it's not 100% yet so I can't submit it yet.

I'm really at a loss, when my wife tries to go to my application directly it just redirects her to her profile page (http://apps.facebook.com/facecartmall/).

Any ideas how I can make this "live" enough to test with other people?

Hi Kyle,

I'm new to Facebook development but actually I think of registering a second app with a cryptic name which is hard to guess, like "sk46kd035jgtsg" or so. Don't put it to sandbox mode and don't publish it in the catalog, so everyone having the correct URL might be able to access. There I could test my beta. Additionally, if there are too many having found out the URL, you could shut down this beta and create a new app with another cryptic name.

Kind regards

Kai

Hi Kyle,

Have you considered putting logic into your initial processing to check the User ID of the interracting user?  You could present an "I'm sorry this application is currently only available in a closed Beta" page if they are not on a white list.  If you want to avoid maintaining a list of user IDs, you could do something like create a Beta Authorisation user and use the condition of them being a friend to allow a user access.
